Calculate the number of passangers in public transport

From "Brussels hacks the crisis"

Go to the project

In order to avoid traffic congestion and air pollution, travellers should be encouraged to use public transport in the city. However due to fear of virus contamination, some travellers may opt for using private cars. If the number of passengers in the arriving train / tram / bus / metro can be communicated to the travellers, they may see to what extend the vehicle they wish to take is occupied, or whether they should choose a different route / means of transport, i.e. take the bus instead of the metro, etc. The number can be calculated when passengers have their STIB/MIVB cards read when entering a vehicle. Certainly, they should have their cards read also when they are getting off the vehicle so that we have the (exact) number of passengers getting on and off. In order to motivate the passengers to have their cards read while getting off, some small amount of 5-10 cents can be transferred to their cards. The info on the number of passengers for the approaching vehicle can be communicated via STIB/MIVB app and also at the platforms / bus / tram stations.
